Hebrews 2:2 -3a – For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?
What is the message declared by angels? This takes us back to chapter 1 verse 1. In the past God spoke to us by the prophets. The message of the prophets, the Old Testament Scriptures was declared somehow with the help of angels. There was an angelic work in the producing of the Old Testament Scriptures. Stephen makes reference to this in his sermon to the Pharisees that led to his death:
Acts 7:53 (ESV) – “you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.”
Moses himself makes reference to this when he speaks to the people of Israel shortly before his death in the Book of the Bible we now call Deuteronomy:
Deut. 33:2 (ESV) He said,
“The Lord came from Sinai
and dawned from Seir upon us;
he shone forth from Mount Paran;
he came from the ten thousands of holy ones,
with flaming fire at his right hand.
And the Apostle Paul says something about angels in Galatians 3:19:
Galatians 3:19 (ESV)Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary.
The whole Word of God is the Word of God. But when God gave the Old Testament Law, He chose to use angels in its delivery and declaration. Using angels did not make the Law less authoritative or less the Word of God. But the writer’s point here is that if the Law, which utilized mere angels, was reliable and breaking it meant death, how much more glorious is the New Covenant, which was put into place without angelic mediation, but with the very hand of the incarnate Son of God?
It is almost a taunt. “You hold inviolable a message transmitted through angels. How much more inviolable then, is a message transmitted through God Himself without mediation?” Everyone would be very impressed to receive a letter from the Queen. No one would say it was less of an honour to receive it simply because it was sent through the public post. But what if the Queen chose to hand deliver the letter? What if she boarded a plane and went directly to your house and knocked on the door and said “Here, I want you to read this”? Would that mean more to you than if it came through the public post? Of course it would. Would that say to you that this particular letter should be held in higher esteem than if the same letter were delivered through the mail? Of course it would.
The Gospel is better than the Law. It was hand delivered by God the Son right into our hearts. He came and secured its benefits for us. When you can find something with more attestation than that then you may abandon the Gospel for it. But there is nothing. Christian, live for, die for, proclaim the glories of a great Gospel and the great Saviour who is the Gospel. He and it cannot be surpassed and you are in possession of that unsurpassable truth. What a glory.
