1When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, 2the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. 3Then the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” 4The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.
5 The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6And the LORD was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. 7So the LORD said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” 8But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.
Now here is a passage of Scripture with some difficulties, although it is very much a part of the whole narrative taking place which shows us the consequences of the fall upon the human race. “Sons of God” in verse 2 are most likely men of God, righteous men. The text is preparing us for the flood narrative and it begins here. How is it that the earth got to be so sinful that God determined to destroy the whole world and start over?
There were godly men who surrendered up their godliness for sexual immorality and intermarriage with ungodly women. The blurring of distinction between godly and ungodly led to the terrible description of life on the planet that we are given in verse 5 “…every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”
This horrible state of affairs came about when the godly chose to compromise their righteousness for the sake of sexual satisfaction. How the human race has not changed!! The Scriptures are full of warnings about keeping ourselves different from a world that does not follow God. We are to be a transformed people. These men fell sexually and that is still a great enticer of people away from the faith. The world screams to be liberated from what it perceives as restrictive and demeaning standards regarding sexual activity. Sex was God’s invention and the biblical standards that we find there are not for our hurt. They are good for us. Ruin lies in wait for those who do their own thing in this area of life and we see it big time in our world today.
Also, we hear Christian people often say that they can marry non-Christian spouses and not be effected spiritually. This is a lie and reflects self deception. Very, very rarely do we see a Christian being the greater influence inn a relationship between a believer and a non believer. And that is what we see in this text.
Today, thank God that He has left us a record of what happens when people abandon the good laws that He has laid down for His creation. Commit yourself afresh to sexual purity and guard your heart very closely.
