Challies posted a marvelous video this morning of a young man who gave up a promising career in professional football because God called Him to something else. Whatever God calls you to is better than what ever else may entice you. If it’s football or hockey or street cleaner, it is the best possible place to be. But what if that call pulls you away from something else that has glamour and money and fame attached to it? The pull of money – a lot of money – and fame and the realization of a dream, are powerful enticements to a young man who has hoped for these things all his life. This is a young man who has truly been gripped by Christ and the Gospel; not because he is going into pastoral ministry, but because he is sacrificing what millions of people long to attain because he knows that God wants him elsewhere; because he is not surrendering himself up to the gods of our culture; because he finds his joy in Jesus Christ. He has only been a believer for a couple of years. He puts many seasoned Christians to shame. May his tribe increase.
Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?
